So, I’ve decided to follow Jeff’s footsteps and replace the smilies here with ones from the Tango Desktop Project.
WordPress hardcodes the emoticon paths in vars.php. Since I neither want to change that file each time I upgrade WordPress, nor use Jeff’s method of renaming the Tango PNGs to have a GIF extension (causing Apache to incorrectly serve them as GIFs), I’m using a long set of Apache rules to redirect them. I’m also using a larger size (24x24), since I felt like the 16x16 ones Jeff used didn’t quite look right.
To give you an idea of the changes, I’m going from this:

Kudos to the Tango Desktop Project for some great artwork! ![]()

Think I prefer the Wordpress ones myself, the Tango are cleaner but the proportions bug me. But then I just like to be awkward.
