Improve File Sharing

March 25th, 2006

Might as well use the anniversary to point out one of the biggest, most embarrassing, most surprising and most frustrating flaws.

One such sore point in the OS X Finder is the lack of flexible file sharing options. No simple “share this folder on the network” thing like Mac OS Classic and Windows 95 through XP had / have them. SharePoints helps, but is needlessly complicated and should not be necessary at all.

Isn’t it a security decision? You share stuff in your Drop folder, no? Or something.

Errr, Public folder.

Sure, you can do that, and that’s a decent and clean mechanism by itself.

But there’s many times where I want to just select a folder and have that shared, and I can’t do that.

It’s not a security decision in that sense, as that folder could simply get new permissions as well.
