(Pronounced “Seven zigs”?)
Via MacOrama: 7zX 1.0.1. Fairly slow server… maybe overloaded from unexpected attention.
The app is purely drag&drop: if you launch it by itself, it’ll immediately quit again. Drag a file or folder on it to have it compressed, or drag a compressed file in 7-zip format (or double-click it), and it will decompress. I.e., a pretty straightforward, minimalist UI.
Sadly, the progress bar is indeterminate, which for bigger files means you not only don’t know when it’ll be done, but (in worst case), whether it’s still doing something at all. I’m sure this will improve, though.
7-zip is a great, strong compression, although not usually as fast and not always as efficient as RAR’s.
I’m not really sure what this is licensed under; there’s no readme as far as I can tell. Specifically, I’d be interested whether it can be redistributed.

As long as it remains free and the you redistribute the entire package, yes.
