Om Malik breaks the news, well, rumor, TUAW picks it up and Dave Winer prods himself for his accurate guess back in May: looks like after their acquisition of FeedDemon in May, NewsGator is now targetting Ranchero Software’s NetNewsWire.
This could lead to something I’ve been wanting all along: a chance to sync my feed subscriptions between Mac OS X (NetNewsWire), Windows XP (FeedDemon) and the web (NewsGator Online), without the need of exporting, importing, etc. Whereby syncing will hopefully include
- read/unread items
- the full hierarchy of folders and my own custom feed names
- automatically adding and removing feeds on all three ‘ends’
I strongly urge Bloglines to catch up with this, acquire NewsFire, PulpFiction or similar, find an excellent feedreader on Windows (not that I was able to, and believe me, I searched a lot) — or maybe turn the aptly-named FeedReader into one — and most of all, work on their sync API.
Competing with newsgator has just become a little harder. (Mind you, I still use Bloglines right now, but when/if Om Malik’s rumor turns out to be true, which looks very likely, I won’t wait long to switch.)
Update: It’s true.
